J&K anti-drug campaign nets 2,581 arrests, ₹188 crore assets in 100 days
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced on Tuesday that the administration's 'Drug-Free J&K campaign' has resulted in the arrest of 2,581 drug traffickers, seizure of nearly 1,431 kilograms of narcotics, and confiscation of assets worth over ₹188.89 crore in its first 100 days.
Speaking at an event to mark the milestone, Sinha said the administration is determined to 'neutralise the drug cartels and narco-terror networks that target our youth'. He highlighted that hundreds of driving licences and vehicle registrations have been revoked, and passports of suspected offenders recommended for suspension. Action has also been taken against non-compliant pharmacies.
'We have sent a clear message that no offender is above the law,' Sinha said. 'Most importantly, thousands of young people have received treatment and are now rebuilding their lives in the mainstream.'
The Lieutenant Governor noted that the first 100 days have laid the foundation for a rigorous path ahead. 'The road ahead will certainly be tough, but our resolve to completely wipe out narco-terrorism is stronger than ever,' he said.
Sinha recalled meeting parents burdened by fear for their children's futures during his visits across districts. 'Standing alongside families in their darkest moments allowed me to truly grasp the depth of their anguish. Yet amid that pain, I saw an unwavering hope of a shared conviction that our youth can break free from addiction and reclaim their lives.'
He said his Padyatra (foot march) allowed him to witness both pain and courage. 'I witnessed despair and also glimpses of hope, and I can proudly say that such unprecedented public support for this campaign has never been seen in the history of Jammu and Kashmir.'
Sinha announced that the administration will soon launch the 'Rehabilitation and Socio-Economic Reintegration Scheme for Drug Abuse Victims, 2026', starting with a pilot in two sensitive districts—one in Jammu and one in Kashmir Division. The initiative is built on a structured three-year cycle: Phase 1 focuses on medical care and therapy, Phase 2 on education and employment, and Phase 3 on long-term relapse prevention with community support.
'The foundation on which smugglers built their empire of narco-terror will be completely destroyed,' Sinha said. 'Our goal of a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir is perfectly clear. This is not merely a dream but our national resolve.'
He added that more rehabilitation centres are being established, consultancy services strengthened, and skill development and employment opportunities provided to youths who complete rehabilitation.
Sinha urged teachers and leaders of religious and social organisations to sustain the energy shown in the first 100 days. 'Let us pledge to turn this campaign into one of India's broadest and most effective mass movements,' he said.
