Japan and India Forge Deeper Strategic Ties in Indo-Pacific Amid Shifting Alliances

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a two-day official visit, receiving a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan. He was received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the two leaders held bilateral talks focusing on defence, economic cooperation, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

The visit underscores the growing strategic partnership between India and Japan, particularly in countering China's increasing assertiveness in the region. While the United States remains a key ally for both nations, analysts note that Japan is quietly emerging as India's strongest partner in the Indo-Pacific, driven by shared concerns over Beijing's military expansion and territorial claims.

During the talks, the two sides signed several agreements, including a pact on defence equipment and technology transfer, and a memorandum of understanding on infrastructure development in third countries. They also discussed the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) and ways to enhance maritime security cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi described the relationship as 'a partnership of immense potential' and highlighted Japan's role in India's economic transformation through investments in high-speed rail, technology, and clean energy. Kishida reaffirmed Japan's commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and praised India's leadership in the region.

The visit comes at a time when the United States is recalibrating its foreign policy priorities, leading some observers to argue that Japan and India are deepening their bilateral ties to fill any potential void. However, both nations have emphasized that their partnership is not directed against any particular country, but rather aims to promote peace and stability.

The ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan included a guard of honour and the playing of national anthems. The two leaders also laid wreaths at Raj Ghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.
