Jagan alleges law and order collapse after Guntur assault on woman
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused the Andhra Pradesh government of overseeing a breakdown of law and order, following an incident in Guntur city where a woman was allegedly stripped and assaulted by a local leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
In a post on social media platform X, Reddy described the July 15 incident as a “stain on humanity” and claimed it reflects a “complete collapse of law and order” in the state. He criticised the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, saying it should “hang its head in shame.”
The incident came to light only after videos of the assault circulated on social media, triggering widespread public outrage. Reddy said the government only then projected itself as taking swift action. He argued the crime could have been prevented if police had acted immediately when the victim first approached them with a complaint.
Reddy also alleged that under what he called the government’s “red book governance,” attacks on opposition leaders, party workers, and social media activists have been encouraged. He claimed the law is being selectively used to protect ruling party leaders while opposition members and victims face harassment through intimidation and questionable criminal cases. This, he said, is pushing the state towards a dangerous breakdown of the rule of law.
The incident has sparked political controversy, with the ruling party denying the allegations and stating that appropriate legal action has been taken. The victim has reportedly filed a complaint, and police have registered a case against the accused.
