Israel Vows Indefinite Military Presence in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza with No Withdrawal Timeline

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced on Wednesday that Israeli forces will remain indefinitely in self-proclaimed security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, with no set timeline for withdrawal. Speaking at a ceremony honouring soldiers killed in the 2006 Lebanon war, Katz stated, 'The IDF will remain in the security zones in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza indefinitely in order to protect our residents and communities from jihadist elements.'

Katz reiterated a warning to Iran, saying that Israel would strike the Islamic republic 'with full force' if it attacked Israel over its operations in Lebanon. This statement comes amid ongoing tensions and sporadic clashes with Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon.

Israel and Lebanon had signed a U.S.-sponsored framework agreement on June 26, 2026, aimed at paving the way for peace and disarming the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. However, Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have repeatedly ruled out withdrawing troops from southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is fully disarmed across the country.

Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the broader Middle East conflict in early March 2026 by launching rocket fire at Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iran's supreme leader in U.S.-Israeli strikes. Israel responded with massive airstrikes and a ground invasion of southern Lebanon. According to Lebanon's Health Ministry, nearly 4,300 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since the war erupted. The Israeli military reports 38 soldiers and one civilian contractor killed in Lebanon during the same period.

Beyond Lebanon, Israel has conducted repeated incursions and bombings in Syria since the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad, aiming to establish a demilitarised zone in southern Syria. In Gaza, Israeli forces currently occupy about 70% of the territory. The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, in effect since October 2025, remains fragile, with both sides accusing each other of violations.

Trump Considered Strikes on Iran but Favours Diplomacy, WSJ Reports

The Wall Street Journal reports that US President Donald Trump considered military strikes on Iran but opted to continue diplomacy. The 60-day deadline for a nuclear deal approaches, while tensions persist over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran insists on its sovereignty over the waterway, and both sides remain far from agreement.
