Iran and US conclude talks on implementing West Asia peace deal in Doha
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced on Wednesday (July 1, 2026) the conclusion of talks in Doha on implementing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tehran and Washington aimed at ending the war in West Asia, according to state media reports.
The participants agreed that “a communication channel would be established by tomorrow” to report and record any violations of the memorandum, the IRNA state news agency quoted Mr. Gharibabadi as saying. This channel is intended to ensure both sides adhere to the terms of the agreement.
Mr. Gharibabadi also stated that Tehran would use some of its frozen assets in Qatar to purchase goods needed by the country, following the talks. Under the MoU, which halted the war between Iran and the United States, Washington agreed to make available Iran’s frozen or restricted assets as part of the implementation process.
United States President Donald Trump commented on Wednesday that the US and Iran were “getting along very well” and that recent indirect talks in Qatar went well. “The denuclearization of Iran is moving along well,” Mr. Trump told reporters. “They’ve had very good meetings, and we’ll see.” He added that Iran has “come a long way.”
The MoU, signed earlier this year, brought a halt to direct hostilities between the two countries, which had escalated into a full-scale war in the region. The agreement includes provisions for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of forces, and the lifting of certain sanctions in exchange for Iranian commitments on its nuclear programme.
The talks in Doha, mediated by Qatari officials, focused on the practical steps needed to implement the MoU, including the release of frozen assets and the establishment of a monitoring mechanism. The communication channel is expected to facilitate direct exchanges between military and diplomatic officials to prevent misunderstandings.
Analysts view the development as a positive step towards reducing tensions in West Asia, though they caution that full implementation remains challenging. Both sides have expressed willingness to continue dialogue.
