Iran and Oman Chart Joint Course for Strait of Hormuz Shipping

Tehran, August 25, 2026 – The foreign ministers of Iran and Oman met in Tehran on Tuesday to discuss a framework for managing ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that carries a significant share of the world's oil supplies.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaid held talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, resulting in a joint statement outlining a proposed framework. The statement said the plan includes a “joint temporary navigational corridor” and cooperation between the two nations to clear mines from the strategic waterway.

The two countries, which lie on opposite sides of the strait, also announced they would continue technical negotiations toward a permanent shipping corridor and an agreement on the future administration of the strait. The statement described these steps as part of a broader effort to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels in a region that has seen heightened tensions in recent months.

Before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, about a fifth of the world's traded oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz. That figure underscores the strait's global importance, as any disruption to shipping can have far-reaching effects on energy markets and international trade.

The talks come at a time of unresolved conflict. It remains unclear whether the United States will accept the emerging agreement between Iran and Oman. U.S. President Donald Trump last week threatened to bomb Oman if it “gets in the way” of American efforts to reopen the strait. That statement has raised concerns in the region, but Omani officials have not publicly responded to the threat.

Analysts note that any successful framework would require not only bilateral agreement but also the backing of other nations with interests in the region. The proposed temporary corridor could be a first step, but challenges such as mine clearance and enforcement of navigational rules remain complex.
