INS Nilgiri model unveiled in Coimbatore to ignite youth's naval aspirations
In a bid to strengthen maritime awareness and encourage the youth to consider a career in the Indian Navy, a full-scale model of INS Nilgiri, the lead ship of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) stealth guided missile frigates, was unveiled at Red Fields in Coimbatore on Friday. Vice Admiral B. Sivakumar, Chief of Materiel, Indian Navy, performed the unveiling ceremony in the presence of Commodore Manmohan Singh, Commanding Officer of the Agrani unit, senior officials from the Army and Air Force, and civil dignitaries from Coimbatore district.
INS Nilgiri, commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 15, 2025, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, is a symbol of India's growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Designed indigenously by the Indian Navy's Directorate of Naval Design and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the frigate is a flagship project under the 'Make in India' initiative. The unveiling of its model in Coimbatore, a city known for its engineering prowess, underscores the Navy's commitment to connecting with the public and inspiring the next generation of sailors and officers.
The warship is equipped with advanced stealth technology, state-of-the-art weaponry, sophisticated sensors, radar systems, guided missiles, and torpedoes. It is capable of undertaking a wide spectrum of naval operations, including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, anti-submarine warfare, and safeguarding India's maritime interests. The model on display has been designed and built by Shivareddy of Ratnagiri, while the display platform has been constructed by Larsen & Toubro, Coimbatore, reflecting the collaborative spirit of Indian industry in defence projects.
The event at Red Fields is part of a broader nationwide outreach by the Indian Navy to foster a deeper connection with the public, particularly young people. By showcasing a tangible representation of a modern warship, the Navy aims to demystify naval life and highlight the diverse opportunities available in the maritime domain, from engineering and navigation to logistics and medical services. The model is expected to serve as an interactive educational tool, drawing students, professionals, and curious citizens alike.
Project 17A, under which the Nilgiri-class frigates are being built, represents a significant leap in Indian warship design. Incorporating enhanced survivability, improved stealth features, and advanced weapon and sensor systems, these ships are among the most sophisticated in the region. Vice Admiral Sivakumar, during his address, emphasised the vital role of maritime awareness in a nation's security consciousness. He also lauded the efforts of the local administration and industry partners in making the event a success, noting that such public displays bridge the gap between the armed forces and civilian society.
