IndiGo Flight With 224 Passengers Makes Safe Emergency Landing in Chennai After Engine Snag
Chennai, August 11, 2026: An IndiGo flight operating from Kolkata to Chennai made an emergency landing at the Chennai airport late Tuesday night after the pilot reported that one of the aircraft's engines was inoperative. All 224 passengers and crew on board are safe.
The flight, designated 6E 723, departed Kolkata at 9.20 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Chennai at 11.30 p.m., according to a statement from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). While approaching the destination, the pilot informed the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Chennai airport that the left engine of the aircraft had become inoperative. At 11.29 p.m., a full emergency was declared, triggering the activation of standard emergency response protocols.
The AAI said in a statement, "Following the declaration of the full emergency, the necessary emergency response arrangements were initiated to facilitate the safe arrival of the aircraft." The aircraft landed safely at 11.37 p.m., and emergency services, including fire tenders and ambulances, were positioned as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
IndiGo, in a separate statement, confirmed the incident: "IndiGo flight 6E 723, operating from Kolkata to Chennai on August 11, 2026, experienced a technical snag shortly before landing in Chennai. Following standard operating procedures, all relevant authorities were immediately informed and the pilots made a priority landing at the Chennai International Airport."
The airline added that the aircraft is currently undergoing necessary checks and maintenance and will resume operations only after receiving all relevant clearances. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed, and routine safety protocols are being followed.
