India’s Warehouse Boom Fuels Storage Solutions Industry Worth ₹7,000 Crore
The automated whir of towering steel coils moving through cutting lines greets visitors at Godrej Enterprises Group’s Storage Solutions facility in Chennai’s Ambattur. Spread over 26 acres, it is one of Asia’s largest and densest storage solutions plants. As the facility marks 25 years, Godrej is planning further expansion around the city.
Every online order, supermarket shelf, and factory assembly line now depends on storage systems that determine how efficiently goods move through the supply chain. As India experiences a boom in e-commerce, quick commerce, and manufacturing, its warehouses are becoming smarter, taller, and denser. Companies such as Godrej Enterprises Group, Nilkamal, and Spanco Storage Systems are benefiting from this shift.
Chennai is a leading warehousing and industrial market, underpinned by its strength as a manufacturing hub. Abhishek Bhutani, managing director of logistics & industrial services at Cushman & Wakefield, notes that the city accounted for 15% of pan-India warehouse and industrial leasing in 2025. Industrial leasing alone was 23% of the total, highlighting the city’s attractiveness for domestic and global manufacturers. Emerging locations such as Redhills and Periyapalayam are expected to see growth in the medium term, he adds.
“We set up the plant in Chennai as we needed port facilities. We are currently exporting over 25% of our manufactured goods,” says Vikas Choudaha, business head of Storage Solutions at Godrej Enterprises Group. The Chennai facility offers around 100,000 tonnes of storage and intralogistics solutions. Steel is transformed into beams, with robotic welding systems capable of producing up to 2,000 beams a day.
Once beams are ready, they move to the painting line, where they are coated based on customer specifications. Common colours include dark blue, orange, and yellow for visibility, though customers can choose according to their branding. Every product undergoes quality testing, including powder-coating tests for weather resistance and salt sprays for corrosion resistance. Finished beams are dispatched to customer sites and assembled according to space and design.
Godrej’s Chennai unit manufactures a wide range of storage products, including picking solutions, shelving systems, racking systems, and palletised systems for various industries. These systems help warehouses organise goods safely, save space, and move products efficiently.
In 2025, pan-India Grade A warehousing market stock stood at 268 million sq. ft., and warehousing and industrial leasing stood at 66 million sq. ft., Bhutani reports. The storage solutions industry is estimated at ₹7,000 crore, driven by the rise of organised retail, manufacturing, and the need for efficient supply chains.
