India's first indigenous non-GMO popcorn maize hybrid launched in AP

India's first indigenous, non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed was launched on Monday at Musunuru in Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh. The seed was unveiled at a programme organised by Gourmet Popcornica, a company that has evolved from a home-grown enterprise in Andhra Pradesh to a significant player in the popcorn maize processing sector.

Popcorn maize, a specialised crop used extensively in the packaged snacks industry, has traditionally relied on imported hybrid seeds for high-quality varieties. High-expansion types, which produce large, fluffy flakes upon heating, are particularly in demand. The introduction of an indigenous non-GMO hybrid is expected to reduce India's reliance on foreign technology and conserve foreign exchange.

Non-GMO seeds, developed through conventional breeding, also appeal to consumers and environmental advocates who prefer food products free of genetic modification. This attribute could give Indian popcorn maize an edge in global markets, where demand for non-GMO produce is rising.

Speaking at the launch, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan said the indigenous hybrid marks a significant leap towards self-reliance in agriculture. "India has long depended on imported hybrid technology for high-quality popcorn maize, and the indigenous hybrid will help reduce this dependence, conserve foreign exchange and strengthen agricultural self-reliance," he said. He added that India's agricultural progress would increasingly depend on indigenous technology, innovation and home-grown solutions capable of competing in global markets.

Radhakrishnan described the initiative as a reflection of the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, which promotes home-grown solutions that can compete globally. He praised Gourmet Popcornica's journey and remarked, "A small beginning should lead to a big vision and a big dream." He also emphasised that farmers are the backbone of India, and that a developed India would be built through the combined efforts of farmers, scientists developing improved seeds, and entrepreneurs creating markets.

During the programme, Radhakrishnan felicitated best-performing farmers from Andhra Pradesh and seven other states, along with partners associated with the company. He noted that more than 17,500 farmers across eight states, cultivating nearly 40,000 acres, are currently associated with Gourmet Popcornica. He added that the enterprise has expanded market access and income opportunities for thousands of farming families.

Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer stressed the need for developing climate-resilient, drought-tolerant and water-efficient crop varieties. He said that with possible El Niño conditions posing fresh challenges, scientists should develop maize, rice and other varieties better adapted to water stress and climatic variations. Such measures, he added, are essential for ensuring food security and stable farm incomes.

The event was attended by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu, and I&PR Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy, among others. The launch of India's first indigenous non-GMO popcorn maize hybrid underscores the potential of domestic agricultural research to reduce import dependence, support farmer livelihoods, and strengthen the country's position in the global processed food market.
