India's First Hydrogen Train Set to Launch on Haryana's Jind-Sonipat Route

India is set to introduce its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a milestone in the country's shift towards cleaner rail transport. The train, developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, is planned to operate on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, under the Northern Railway's Delhi Division.

The Ministry of Railways has directed Northern Railway to prepare for the train's commercial launch. Last month, the train completed its final trial run, which included safety evaluations such as emergency braking distance tests and oscillation checks to assess performance and stability.

Hydrogen trains use fuel cells to convert hydrogen into electricity, emitting only water vapour. This technology offers a zero-emission alternative to diesel trains, aligning with global efforts to decarbonise transportation. With this launch, India will join a select group of countries—including Germany, Sweden, Japan, and China—that currently operate hydrogen-powered trains.

The train's operational details, including timetable, speed, and passenger features, are yet to be officially announced. However, the Railway Board has confirmed the route and directed officials to finalise logistics. The Jind-Sonipat section was chosen due to its moderate traffic and existing infrastructure, making it suitable for a pilot project.

Experts note that hydrogen trains are particularly viable on non-electrified routes, where electrification is costly or impractical. India has several such routes, and the success of this pilot could pave the way for wider adoption. The train's launch also supports India's broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.

The development of the hydrogen train aligns with Indian Railways' broader push towards green energy. The railway has already committed to 100% electrification of its broad-gauge network by 2025 and has introduced several initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, including solar power installations and energy-efficient locomotives.

The hydrogen fuel for the train is expected to be sourced locally, though specific supply arrangements have not been disclosed. The train's range and refuelling frequency will be key factors in its operational viability. Trials have demonstrated that the technology is safe and reliable under Indian conditions.

Passenger services on the Jind-Sonipat route are currently provided by diesel multiple units (DMUs). The hydrogen train is expected to replace one of these services initially, offering a quieter and cleaner ride. Fare structures and ticketing details will be announced closer to the launch date.

Indian Railways has also floated tenders for additional hydrogen trains, indicating plans to expand the fleet if the pilot proves successful. The initiative is part of a larger national hydrogen mission, which aims to boost green hydrogen production and use across sectors.

While the exact launch date has not been confirmed, officials expect the hydrogen train to begin operations within the next few months, pending final safety clearances from the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.

India has asked the UN human rights office to state when it will issue a report on steps taken by Pakistan to address concerns in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, citing earlier OHCHR statements on killings, internet curbs and detained leaders.
