India's defence production surges to Rs 1.78 lakh crore; Rajnath Singh unveils mega press

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday laid the foundation stone for a 10,000-tonne aluminium extrusion press at Yantra India Limited's Ordnance Factory Ambajhari unit in Nagpur. The project aims to boost indigenous defence manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports.

The Bhoomi Pujan ceremony, conducted with Vedic chants, was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar, and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and Yantra India Limited.

Speaking at the event, Singh noted that India's domestic defence production has grown significantly. 'Domestic defence production, which stood at Rs 46,000 crore in 2014, has increased to more than Rs 1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26,' he said.

The aluminium extrusion press is expected to enhance the country's capability to produce critical components for defence platforms, furthering the government's push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
