India's Commonwealth Games Hopes Dented: Judoka Suspended, Weightlifting Quota Cut
Even before the official opening of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Indian contingent has suffered a significant setback. Two medal prospects — one in weightlifting and one in judo — have been withdrawn due to anti-doping rule violations.
Arun Kumar, a judoka competing in the 78 kg category, was provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and removed from the squad. As per competition rules, India cannot name a replacement since the judo team has not yet departed for Glasgow.
Hours after Kumar's suspension, it was revealed that weightlifter Dilbagh Singh would have to return from Glasgow, although he is not personally at fault. The Indian weightlifting team reported five positive doping tests between June 1, 2025, and July 22, 2026. As a consequence, the athlete quota for weightlifting was reduced from 16 to 11, cutting the squad size and likely affecting India's medal tally in the sport.
India had expected to win at least half a dozen medals in weightlifting. The reduction in squad size is a major blow to those hopes. Both the athletes and the Indian Olympic Association have been informed of the decisions.
