Indian Women's Hockey Team Clinches FIH Nations Cup, Secures Pro League Return
The Indian women's hockey team delivered a defensive masterclass against New Zealand to win the FIH Nations Cup title on Sunday, securing their promotion back to the FIH Pro League.
India's victory came through goals from Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo in the first quarter, which proved sufficient to keep the New Zealand side at bay for the remainder of the match. The final score was 2-0 in favour of India.
This marks India's second Nations Cup title, having won the inaugural edition in 2022. The team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, starting with a 3-2 win over the United States, followed by a 2-1 victory against Japan, and a 3-2 win over Uruguay in the Pool A stage. In the semi-final, India registered a commanding 6-0 win over Chile.
The FIH Nations Cup serves as a qualification event for the top-tier FIH Pro League. By winning the tournament, India's women's team has earned a place in the next Pro League season, which features the world's best teams.
The Indian team's performance highlighted strong defensive organisation and effective counter-attacks. Goalkeeper Savita Punia made crucial saves to maintain the clean sheet in the final. The defence, led by vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka, neutralised New Zealand's attacking threats throughout the match.
Coach Janneke Schopman praised her team's discipline and resilience. "The players executed the game plan perfectly. They showed great character and determination to win this title," Schopman said after the match.
Navneet Kaur, who scored the opening goal, was named Player of the Match. "We worked hard as a unit. This victory is for everyone who supported us," she said.
The promotion back to the FIH Pro League marks a significant achievement for Indian women's hockey, which had been relegated from the league in 2023 after finishing last in the previous edition. The team will now prepare for the upcoming Pro League season, set to begin later this year.
Hockey India congratulated the team, stating that the victory reflects the growing strength of Indian women's hockey on the global stage.
