Indian Seafarer Confirmed Dead After Vessel Attack Off Oman
An Indian national who was reported missing following an attack on the commercial vessel GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman has been confirmed dead, his family said on Monday. The father-in-law of the deceased informed Reuters, without disclosing further details.
The GFS Galaxy came under attack on Sunday in an incident that officials have attributed to Iranian forces. Of the 11 Indian nationals on board, 10 were rescued by Omani authorities, while one remained missing. Search operations had been underway until the family confirmed the death.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the attack, stating: 'We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman, earlier today. Of the 11 Indian nationals on board, 10 have been rescued so far, while 1 Indian National is reportedly missing. Our Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with the Omani authorities in the ongoing search and rescue operation. We thank the Omani authorities for their support.'
The incident adds to rising tensions in the Gulf region, where commercial vessels have faced increased risks. The Indian embassy in Oman continues to liaise with local authorities and provide assistance to the affected families. No further details about the deceased or the circumstances of the attack have been released by official sources.
The Indian government has not yet issued a formal statement beyond the MEA's condemnation, and investigations by Omani authorities are ongoing.
