Indian-Origin Woman Shot Dead in Toronto; Suspect Charged with Murder
The Toronto Police Service has confirmed the death of a 26-year-old Indian-origin woman in a suspected targeted shooting on Friday morning. The victim has been identified as Navneet Kaur. A 37-year-old man, also of Indian descent, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
According to police, officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 7:23 a.m. on July 24, 2026, at the intersection of Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard in Toronto. Upon arrival, they found Navneet Kaur with a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts, she was declared dead at the scene.
Investigators stated that the victim and the suspect had a brief interaction before the man allegedly shot her and fled on foot. Witnesses reported seeing a woman collapse after a single gunshot. The suspect, identified as Sharnjeet Singh of Brampton, was later traced and arrested by the Ontario Provincial Police.
Sharnjeet Singh has been charged with first-degree murder and failure to comply with an undertaking. Police believe the incident was targeted and that there are no outstanding suspects. The homicide unit is actively investigating the case.
This incident follows another recent tragedy involving the Indian-origin community in Canada. Earlier this month, in Edmonton, Alberta, a 22-year-old man, Ritish Kumar, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder for the alleged strangulation death of his 23-year-old partner, Damanpreet Kaur. Police described that incident as an intimate partner homicide.
The killings have raised concerns within the diaspora community about safety and domestic violence. Canadian authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
