Indian-Origin US Man Held for Hoax Bomb Threats to BSE, Hotels, Courts: How Police Traced Him
Mumbai and Tamil Nadu police have arrested a United States-based Indian-origin man, Sharath Subramaniam Shankar, for sending multiple hoax bomb threats to high-profile locations including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), courts, five-star hotels, and schools. The accused was detained upon his arrival in Tamil Nadu earlier this week.
Investigators identified nine recurring patterns in the emails, leading them to conclude that a single individual was behind the threats. A Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against Shankar, and technical analysis by Tamil Nadu police was instrumental in tracking him down. A senior Mumbai Police officer confirmed that the operation involved meticulous digital forensics.
The threats caused significant disruption and security mobilisations. However, no explosives were found at any of the targeted sites. The case highlights the growing challenge of cyber-enabled crimes and cross-border jurisdiction. Shankar faces multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) registered across Mumbai and Tamil Nadu.
