India to protect national interests after Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan sign defence pact

India has said it will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests following the signing of a tripartite joint defence agreement among Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The pact, known as the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, was sealed on Friday, August 7, 2026.

At a media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is closely examining the implications of the agreement from the perspective of national security and regional peace and stability. “Regarding this agreement, we are examining its implications both from the perspective of India’s national security and considerations of regional peace and stability. India remains fully committed to safeguarding its national interests and will take all necessary measures in this regard,” Mr. Jaiswal said.

The joint statement issued by the three countries described the agreement as a measure to strengthen “collective deterrence against any act of aggression.” It further stated that “any armed attack against any one of the three states shall be regarded as an attack against them all.” The statement, however, did not specify any particular area of common concern in the broader context of ongoing hostilities in West Asia.

A Turkish diplomatic source clarified that the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement is a “defence-oriented partnership that does not target any country.” The source added that the pact “seeks to strengthen commitments to preserving regional and global peace, stability and prosperity through burden-sharing and collective security.”

On Friday, the MEA had issued a brief statement saying India was “closely following” the development. The latest remarks by the MEA spokesperson come as India continues to monitor geopolitical shifts in the West Asian region, which has seen heightened tensions in recent months.

India has traditionally maintained a policy of strategic autonomy, engaging with all countries in the region while protecting its own security interests. Analysts note that the involvement of Pakistan in this defence pact may be a matter of concern for India, given the long-standing bilateral tensions. However, the MEA spokesperson did not directly refer to Pakistan or any specific threat.

The agreement among the three Muslim-majority nations has drawn attention from various capitals, as it could alter the security dynamics in the region. The pact allows for collective defence, though its operational details remain unclear.
