India Post Launches Personalised Cheque Books for Savings Account Holders
The Department of Posts has launched a new service allowing Post Office Savings Account holders to request personalised cheque books. Under this initiative, each cheque leaf will come pre-printed with the account holder’s name, account number, and the Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) of the India Post office. The move aims to enhance both convenience and security for millions of account holders across the country.
The personalised cheque book facility is being introduced free of cost. Customers can avail themselves of it by submitting a request at their nearest post office. Once processed, the cheque book will be delivered to the account holder’s registered address via post, eliminating the need for multiple visits to the branch. This doorstep delivery is expected to particularly benefit senior citizens and customers in rural and semi-urban areas where accessibility can be a challenge.
The Department has clarified that the existing instant cheque book facilities available over the counter at post offices will continue alongside the new personalised service. This ensures that customers who prefer immediate issuance can still obtain a cheque book on the spot, while those who value the added security of pre-printed details can opt for the personalised version.
By pre-printing account holder details and the IFSC, the cheque leaves reduce the risk of manual errors during filling and minimise the chances of fraudulent alterations. The IFSC code printed on the cheque is essential for electronic fund transfers, and its presence makes the instrument ready for clearing under the cheque truncation system (CTS) used by Indian banks. This initiative aligns with the broader financial inclusion goals of India Post, which runs one of the largest and oldest postal savings systems in the world.
India Post has been progressively modernising its banking and financial services. In recent years, the Post Office Savings Bank has introduced core banking solutions, internet banking, mobile banking, and Aadhaar-linked transactions. The new personalised cheque book facility is another step in this digital transformation journey, aimed at making postal services more customer-friendly and competitive with commercial banks.
The service is expected to be particularly useful for individuals who rely on cheque payments for utility bills, rent, or other recurring expenses. For small businesses and self-help groups that often operate through Post Office Savings Accounts, having a professionally printed cheque book with essential details pre-filled can add credibility and ease in financial dealings.
Account holders are advised to ensure that their registered address is up to date before applying, as delivery will be made to that address only. Applicants may be required to fill a simple request form and, in some post offices, biometric authentication may be used for verification. Detailed guidelines have been circulated to all post offices to streamline the process.
While the department has not announced any immediate change to the free-of-cost model, it has stated that the initiative is part of its commitment to enhancing customer experience. As more people adopt digital payments, India Post’s move to improve traditional cheque-based services shows a balanced approach, recognising that a significant section of the population still depends on physical instruments for financial transactions.
