India-Japan Defence Ministers to Meet in New Delhi on August 20

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi will meet Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on August 20 to review ongoing defence cooperation and explore ways to expand collaboration in defence technology, industry, and maritime security, according to officials familiar with the matter.

Mr. Koizumi is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai on August 19 and is expected to visit an Indian naval facility before travelling to the capital. The three-day visit comes shortly after India and Japan signed their first agreement for the joint development of the UNICORN naval radio antenna system, a significant step in bilateral defence technology cooperation.

The two ministers are expected to discuss cooperation on defence equipment, including Japan's planned export of the UNICORN stealth communication system. They are also likely to review plans for the joint development of defence equipment, including drones, with a focus on strengthening maritime security and operational capabilities.

This visit follows the eighth India-Japan Defence Policy Dialogue held in Tokyo on July 13, co-chaired by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Japan's Vice Minister of Defence Kano Koji. That dialogue reviewed bilateral cooperation in emerging domains such as cybersecurity, space, advanced military technologies, and defence industry collaboration.

India and Japan have deepened defence and security engagement in recent years, with a shared emphasis on maritime security and maintaining a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific. Their cooperation includes regular military exercises, exchanges between armed forces, and growing collaboration on defence equipment and technology.

Mr. Koizumi's visit comes nearly seven weeks after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi visited New Delhi for the India-Japan Annual Summit, where both sides agreed to deepen defence and security cooperation, focusing on maritime security, defence equipment, and technology collaboration under India's 'Make in India' framework.

The upcoming meeting underscores the steady expansion of the India-Japan strategic partnership, which has gained momentum in recent years amid shared concerns about regional stability and maritime security. Analysts note that the two countries are working to translate political commitments into concrete projects, particularly in defence manufacturing and technology sharing.

The India-Japan defence relationship is seen as a key pillar of the broader Indo-Pacific strategy, with both nations committed to upholding international law and ensuring freedom of navigation in the region. The expected outcomes of the August 20 meeting may include new agreements or roadmaps for future cooperation, though officials have not confirmed specific deliverables.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
