India Condemns Black Sea Ship Attacks, Urges Dialogue as Ukraine Seeks Peace Role
NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha on Monday, addressing recent attacks on commercial shipping and Indian seafarers in the Black Sea. Jaishankar reiterated India's position that such attacks by any party are absolutely unacceptable and must be unequivocally condemned.
India had earlier summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to protest an attack on a commercial vessel that resulted in the death of an Indian seafarer. Ukraine has blamed Russia for the deteriorating security situation in the Black Sea, alleging that Russian attacks on civilian vessels undermine freedom of navigation, threaten global food security, and fuel instability in energy markets.
In a statement on social media platform X, Jaishankar said he was briefed on developments pertaining to the Ukraine conflict and peace negotiations. "India has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy between parties concerned," he wrote. He also highlighted the fragility of the current international situation, noting that multiple conflicts are affecting fuel, fertiliser, and food security, especially for countries in the Global South.
Sybiha briefed Jaishankar on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's recent visit to the United States and reaffirmed Ukraine's commitment to a lasting peace. He encouraged India to play an active role in peace efforts, recognising India's influence and longstanding advocacy for dialogue.
India has maintained a neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, consistently calling for a cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomatic negotiations. The meeting underscores India's concern over the impact of the war on global supply chains and the safety of its citizens working in international shipping.
