India Bars Sheikh Hasina from Political Activity, Extradition Request Under Review
The Government of India has informed a parliamentary panel that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is not permitted to engage in political activities while on Indian soil. This clarification comes in response to recent statements by Hasina indicating a possible return to Bangladesh by the end of this year.
On Thursday, Bangladesh Law Minister M Asaduzzaman stated that Hasina would likely be arrested immediately upon her return to Bangladesh. The extradition request submitted by Dhaka for Hasina is currently being examined by Indian authorities.
The Ministry of External Affairs told the panel, “The extradition request (sent by Dhaka for Hasina) is being examined by the competent authorities of the Government of India in accordance with applicable law and established procedures.” The ministry did not provide a timeline for the decision.
Sheikh Hasina, who served as Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001 and again from 2009 to 2023, has been in India since her resignation in August 2023 amid political turmoil. The government's stance underscores India's commitment to respecting international norms and bilateral agreements while ensuring that its territory is not used for political activities against a neighbouring country.
The development highlights the delicate diplomatic balance India maintains with its eastern neighbour. Both countries share deep cultural and economic ties, and India has historically been cautious about any actions that could be perceived as interference in Bangladesh's internal affairs.
