Independence Day: PM Modi's 13th Red Fort Address, 'Vande Mataram' Marks Celebrations
New Delhi, August 15: India on Saturday celebrated its 79th Independence Day, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the nation in paying homage to the freedom fighters and outlining his government's vision for a developed India. The historic Red Fort in Delhi served as the venue for the main event, where the Prime Minister unfurled the national flag amid a resplendent display of patriotism.
The morning began with the Prime Minister arriving at the Red Fort in a decorated vehicle, greeted by chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' from the gathered crowd. The ceremony witnessed the hoisting of the Tricolour, followed by the singing of the national anthem. For the first time at this venue, the soulful strains of 'Vande Mataram' were also played, adding a deeply emotional tone to the proceedings and connecting citizens to the country's rich cultural heritage.
In his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Modi, who was delivering his 13th consecutive Independence Day speech, highlighted the achievements of his government over the past year. He spoke about the rapid economic growth, strides in digital infrastructure, and the expansion of social welfare schemes benefiting millions. He reiterated his commitment to making India a developed nation by 2047, the centenary of independence, and called upon citizens to contribute to this collective mission.
The Prime Minister also touched upon India's role on the global stage, emphasising its leadership in areas such as renewable energy, space exploration, and digital payments. He highlighted the successful hosting of the G20 summit and other international events as markers of rising global confidence in India. He reminded the nation of the importance of unity and urged everyone to shun divisive elements that could weaken the social fabric.
The celebration at Red Fort was a visual spectacle, with cultural performances by schoolchildren and artists representing different states of India. The event showcased the country's diversity through traditional dances, music, and tableaux. Thousands of people, including dignitaries, diplomats, and citizens, were present to witness the occasion. The atmosphere was charged with patriotic fervour as the crowd waved flags and sang along to freedom songs.
Authorities had made elaborate security arrangements, deploying a multi-layered security apparatus around the capital, including drones, snipers, and anti-aircraft systems, to ensure the safety of the event. The traffic was regulated, and stringent checks were in place for all attendees.
Apart from the main event, similar flag-hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes were held across the country in state capitals, district headquarters, schools, and colleges. The day was observed as a public holiday, with people participating in various patriotic activities and remembering the sacrifices of those who fought for India's freedom.
Speaking to citizens, PM Modi concluded his address with an appeal to uphold the values of the Constitution and work towards an India that is prosperous, inclusive, and respected worldwide.
