IIT Guwahati Student Drowns in Brahmaputra; Friend Rescued, Police Probe Underway
GUWAHATI: A third-year BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati drowned in the Brahmaputra River on Saturday evening after she and a companion accidentally slipped into the water near a riverside ghat, police said. The second student was rescued within minutes, while the deceased's body was recovered after a search operation lasting nearly three hours.
The incident occurred outside the IIT campus at a location known as Lathia Bagicha Ghat, a popular but unguarded riverside spot. According to police sources, the two students had gone to the area to spend time by the river when they slipped and fell into the water. A passerby reported the incident to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), which deployed divers immediately.
One of the students was pulled out alive approximately ten minutes after the fall and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her condition is reported to be stable. The body of the other student was recovered around three hours later by NDRF divers. Police have registered a case and are conducting a formal investigation, but preliminary information indicates that the incident was accidental.
In an official statement, IIT Guwahati confirmed the tragedy and extended its condolences to the family. The institute identified the deceased as a student of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE).
“It is with profound grief and deep sorrow that IIT Guwahati informs of the untimely demise of a BTech 3rd Year student of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), who tragically lost her life in a drowning incident near Lathia Bagicha Ghat yesterday evening,” the statement read.
“This is an irreparable loss to the Institute community. IIT Guwahati extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and loved ones during this moment of immense sorrow, and stands in solidarity with them, offering all possible support during this difficult time,” it added.
The Brahmaputra, one of the largest rivers in the world, flows alongside the IIT Guwahati campus and has several unguarded ghats that are popular spots among students and locals. River accidents are not uncommon in the region, particularly during the monsoon season when water levels and currents are unpredictable. Experts have repeatedly called for better safety measures and warning signs at such locations.
The institute has not yet announced any official memorial or support measures, but stated that it is in contact with the bereaved family. Students and faculty have expressed shock and grief over the loss, and a sense of mourning prevails on the campus.
Police have appealed to the public to remain cautious near the river and to avoid venturing into areas without proper safety arrangements. Further details of the investigation are awaited.
