IIT Bombay second-year student found dead in hostel room; police investigate
A 20-year-old student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was found dead in his hostel room late Tuesday evening, after his parents raised an alarm when they were unable to reach him. The student has been identified as Sohail Rajkumar Sangwan, a second-year Material Science student from Delhi.
According to police, Sangwan was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room on the fourth floor of Hostel No. 4. A handwritten note, described by authorities as containing romantic poems, was recovered from the room. Police officials stated they are investigating the circumstances leading to the death and have not yet determined a motive.
In a statement, IIT Bombay expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the family. The institute said it is cooperating with the police investigation and providing support to students affected by the tragedy.
Mental health experts emphasise that suicide is complex and rarely caused by a single factor. They urge media to avoid speculative reporting that may oversimplify such incidents.
