IIM Bangalore receives Tata Trusts grant for undergraduate school; first batch in August

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) announced on Tuesday that it has secured a philanthropic commitment from the Tata Trusts to support its School of Undergraduate Studies (SoUS). The grant will contribute to the school’s academic vision, campus development, and long-term institutional roadmap, according to a statement from the institute.

The School of Undergraduate Studies is located approximately 27 kilometres from IIM Bangalore’s main campus and represents the institute’s formal entry into full-time residential undergraduate education. It has been established as part of a broader effort to shape undergraduate learning in the country, moving beyond the institute’s traditional focus on postgraduate management programmes.

Initially, the school will offer two four-year residential BSc (Honours) programmes. One is a BSc (Honours) in Economics with a minor in Data Science, and the other is a BSc (Honours) in Data Science with a minor in Economics. The curriculum is designed to combine foundational knowledge in economics with computational and analytical skills, responding to the increasing demand for data-literate graduates in various sectors.

The first batch of students is slated to begin classes in August, almost a year after the institute opened admissions for these degree programmes. The announcement of the Tata Trusts grant adds further momentum to the initiative, providing resources for infrastructure and academic planning.

IIM Bangalore, founded in 1973, is recognised as one of India’s leading management institutions. Its expansion into undergraduate education aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020, which encourages multidisciplinary and flexible learning at the undergraduate level. The institute joins a small group of older IIMs that have introduced undergraduate programmes in recent years, following the trail blazed by IIM Indore’s Integrated Programme in Management launched in 2011.

The Tata Trusts, established in 1892 by Jamsetji Tata, are among India’s oldest and largest philanthropic organisations. They have a long history of supporting educational initiatives across the country—from primary schooling to advanced research institutions. Their partnership with IIM Bangalore on this project underscores a shared interest in fostering accessible, high-quality education that blends theoretical rigour with practical skills.

The undergraduate programmes will follow the four-year honours structure common in Indian universities after the NEP reforms. Students will have the option to earn a degree with a minor specialisation, gaining interdisciplinary exposure. The residential nature of the courses is expected to provide a holistic learning environment, with students living on campus and participating in co-curricular activities. The institute has not yet disclosed the exact intake capacity or further details about admissions for subsequent academic cycles.

While the main IIM Bangalore campus is located in Bannerghatta Road, the School of Undergraduate Studies will operate from a separate site to accommodate its specific needs. The distance from the main campus raises questions about student access to shared facilities, but the institute has indicated that the undergraduate school is being developed as a self-contained academic hub.

The collaboration with Tata Trusts is likely to bolster IIM Bangalore’s efforts in faculty recruitment, research facilities, and student amenities at the new school. Observers note that such philanthropy-driven projects can play a significant role in expanding access to quality undergraduate education in India, particularly when public funding is stretched.

As the August launch approaches, the institute is expected to release more information on the curriculum, faculty, and campus life. For now, the Tata Trusts grant marks a concrete step in IIM Bangalore’s vision to become a comprehensive educational institution, contributing to both management studies and liberal arts-based undergraduate programmes.
