Hyderabad Road Renamed 'Donald Trump Avenue' During US Independence Celebrations
The United States Embassy in India, in collaboration with the Telangana government, hosted a reception in Hyderabad on Tuesday to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. The event, titled 'Freedom 250', included the unveiling of a ceremonial plaque renaming the road adjacent to the U.S. Consulate as 'Donald Trump Avenue'. The renaming was officially conferred by the Telangana government.
U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka jointly presided over the event. Ambassador Gor highlighted the significance of Hyderabad in U.S.-India relations, noting the city's contributions in sectors such as information technology, aerospace, and defence. He stated that the region exemplifies the growing partnership between the two countries.
The Ambassador also referenced ongoing bilateral initiatives, including an interim trade agreement and the 'Mission India' investment plan, which aims to bring over $20 billion in new investment to the United States. He expressed gratitude to the Telangana government for the gesture of naming the road, describing it as a reflection of the respectful partnership between the two nations.
Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka congratulated the American people on the milestone and emphasised Telangana's role in fostering closer ties with the United States. He underscored the state's commitment to strengthening economic and diplomatic cooperation.
U.S. Consul-General Laura Williams, presiding over her first Independence Day reception in Hyderabad, praised the region's innovation ecosystem. She noted that Hyderabad's strengths in aerospace, defence, artificial intelligence, and biopharmaceuticals across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha are shaping global trends. Williams reaffirmed the consulate's dedication to facilitating the exchange of talent and ideas to sustain growth in these sectors.
The event was attended by dignitaries from government, business, and academia, reflecting the deepening ties between the United States and India. The renaming of the road is seen as a symbolic gesture acknowledging Hyderabad's strategic importance in bilateral relations.
