Hunger strike enters 18th day: Sonam Wangchuk loses 9 kg, doctors warn of critical phase
Activist Sonam Wangchuk, on hunger strike for 18 days at Jantar Mantar, remains stable but is under close medical observation as his weight continues to drop. Doctors from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital visit him twice daily, monitoring vital signs and metabolic changes.
According to Dr Satish Lamba, a physician overseeing his care, Wangchuk has lost about 9 kg in 17 days, with an additional 400 grams lost in the last day. His current weight is approximately 57.15 kg. The 59-year-old has no underlying conditions such as hypertension or diabetes, which doctors consider a positive factor.
Wangchuk's blood pressure on Wednesday was 110/70 mmHg and blood sugar 80 mg/dL, within normal range. However, doctors note that his body is beginning to break down muscle tissue for energy, as indicated by rising uric acid levels and the presence of ketones in his urine — a sign of fat metabolism. Dr Lamba warned that prolonged fasting could lead to electrolyte imbalance and kidney damage.
Dr Lamba explained the process: "When you don't eat, the body first uses stored carbohydrates, then burns fat, producing ketones. Ketones have been detected in his urine sample, which is an alarming sign. His body will also face muscle loss as it will begin breaking down muscle tissue for energy."
A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday by lawyer Rakesh Saini, seeking an order to force-feed Wangchuk, citing risk to his life. The PIL, initially scheduled for hearing, was adjourned to Thursday due to a lawyers' strike.
Under medical norms, a person cannot be force-fed unless found incapable of making an informed decision. Dr Lamba noted that intravenous support would be safer than tube feeding if intervention becomes necessary, as tube feeding carries risks such as aspiration and sudden insulin spikes.
Doctors continue to monitor Wangchuk's kidney function, which remains normal for now. The next few days are considered critical for his health.
