High Security at Delhi Hospital After Activist’s Hunger Strike

The atmosphere at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital turned into a high-security zone after environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to the emergency ward on Saturday morning. Wangchuk, who had been on a 21-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged paper leaks, was moved by Delhi Police due to his deteriorating health.

Hospital corridors were lined with barricades and guarded by police personnel, who questioned visitors, attendants, and patients before allowing them to pass. The security presence intensified near the emergency ward. Hospital staff and relatives of other patients appeared curious and anxious, with many asking about the identity of the person inside and the reason for the heavy security.

Wangchuk was brought to the emergency ward at 7:30 am on Saturday. A team of doctors attended to him, conducting medical tests. His wife was present beside him. According to a medical bulletin released by Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday afternoon, Wangchuk has refused intravenous fluids and any other medication advised by doctors. The hospital stated that although intravenous fluids were advised, the patient has refused all intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solution and any other medication. He is being continuously monitored and counselled to accept treatment in the interest of his health.

Wangchuk's hunger strike began on 27 January at Jantar Mantar, where he and supporters protested against alleged irregularities in the conduct of examinations. The protest was aimed at seeking the resignation of the Education Minister over the issue. The hunger strike was paused with his hospitalization.
