High Court Refuses Urgent Hearing to Abhishek Banerjee Amid Multiple Cases

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, declined an urgent hearing request from Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, who had cited planned medical treatment abroad. Banerjee, facing multiple cases and FIRs, sought early hearing to facilitate his travel for eye surgery.

Justice Saugata Bhattacharya ruled that the case would be heard in the normal course, denying the request for an expedited hearing. The decision came as Banerjee faces questioning from the West Bengal CID in the State Assembly signature fraud case and for alleged inflammatory remarks during election campaigns. He has also been questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in a recruitment scam.

Despite the ongoing investigations, authorities have not placed any restrictions on Banerjee's travel abroad. Banerjee had previously undergone eye surgery following a 2016 road accident near Murshidabad, during which he sustained injuries below his eyes.

In a separate development, an FIR has been registered against former Kolkata mayor Atin Ghosh and his daughter Priyadarshini Ghosh on charges of land grabbing and fraud.
