High Court orders police security for lawyers after alleged assault in Lucknow

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday ordered police protection for a group of advocates who alleged they were assaulted by fellow lawyers inside the Lucknow district court premises. The incident, which reportedly involved two women lawyers and their client, prompted an urgent hearing before a special bench constituted at 7 pm.

A bench of Justices Rajan Roy and Manjive Shukla termed the allegations “serious” and directed that the advocates be provided adequate security during their stay in Lucknow and while appearing before the court on the next date of hearing. “The matter not only involves commission of an offence by the alleged persons but also of interference in the dispensation of justice,” the bench observed.

Waiving the requirement of an affidavit to support the application, the court said the matter could not be delayed over “procedural technicalities” given the urgency. The high court has listed the matter for further hearing on a later date.
