Heavy Rains Lash Delhi, IMD Issues Red and Orange Alerts
Several parts of the national capital received heavy showers on Monday, August 24, 2026, offering residents relief from the humid conditions that prevailed the previous day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for the region, forecasting continued rainfall in the coming hours.
According to IMD data, between 8.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m., Chhatarpur recorded the highest rainfall in Delhi at 28 mm, followed by Lodi Road at 24.6 mm and Pitampura at 18.5 mm. The Ridge received 5 mm, Mayur Vihar 1.5 mm, Safdarjung 1 mm, and Ayanagar 0.1 mm during the same period.
The downpour, accompanied by strong winds reaching up to 40 kmph, led to waterlogging at several locations, including near New Ashok Nagar Metro Station, Burari, CR Park, and Alaknanda. Commuters reported traffic snarls on social media, with some stretches left waterlogged and difficult to navigate.
The minimum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung weather station was 27.8 degrees Celsius, which is 1.4 degrees above the normal for this time of year. The Ridge registered the lower minimum at 24 degrees Celsius. IMD expects the maximum temperature to settle around 34 degrees Celsius.
In weather warnings, a red alert indicates the need for immediate action as severe weather is expected, while an orange alert advises residents to be prepared for potential disruptions. IMD has urged people to stay indoors where possible and to avoid low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
The monsoon season in Delhi typically sees heavy rainfall in late August, and such showers are a recurring feature. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as conditions evolve.
