Heavy Rains in North Telangana: Godavari Rising, Reservoir Gates Opened
Rains continued to lash several parts of north Telangana for a second consecutive day on Thursday, raising water levels in rivers and reservoirs and disrupting normal life in parts of the erstwhile Adilabad and Karimnagar districts.
Several reservoirs across the Godavari basin received heavy inflows due to widespread rainfall in catchment areas. The Godavari River at the temple town of Bhadrachalam in Bhadradri Kothagudem district rose to around 28.70 feet late Thursday evening.
At the Kadem project in Nirmal district, 16 of its 18 gates were lifted as inflows reached 1.38 lakh cusecs, with an outflow of 1.46 lakh cusecs. At the Taliperu medium irrigation project in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, 12 gates were lifted to release floodwater into the Godavari.
The water level at the Sripada Yellampalli project in Peddapalli district rose to 145.89 metres, close to its storage capacity of 148 metres, due to heavy inflows.
In a rain-related incident, two members of a family were injured when a portion of their compound wall collapsed at Algaon village in Kotapally mandal of Mancherial district. They were admitted to the Government General Hospital in Mancherial.
Labour Minister G. Vivek Venkataswamy visited rain-affected areas in Mandamarri town and reviewed the situation with officials. He assured the injured family of an Indiramma house and directed officials to closely monitor the rain situation.
Meanwhile, the Karimnagar district administration declared a holiday for schools of all managements on July 31, in view of the forecast of heavy rain on Friday. The coming second Saturday will be a working day, officials said.
