Heavy Rain Paralyzes Delhi: 51mm in 3 Hours, Red Alert Issued
Delhi faced severe disruptions on Tuesday as heavy rain led to widespread waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city. Major commercial areas such as Connaught Place and Janpath Market saw water entering shops, affecting business until early afternoon. Commuters, including students, were seen wading through knee-deep water on arterial roads.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Safdarjung, the base weather station, recorded 51 mm of rainfall between 11.30 am and 2.30 pm. Pusa received the highest at 80 mm, followed by Janakpuri (72 mm), Lodi Road (63.4 mm), and Chhatarpur (57.5 mm). Later, the IMD issued a red alert warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall.
The situation was mirrored in neighbouring cities like Gurgaon and Noida, where waterlogging also caused traffic jams. The New Delhi Traders Association noted that G Block, A Block, and parts of the Outer Circle remained flooded until around 1 pm, impacting commercial activity.
Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors as the rain continued into the evening. The Delhi Traffic Police advised commuters to use alternate routes and check for updates on waterlogged areas.
