Handbrake Lapse: BEST Bus Crashes Into Colaba Depot Office, No Injuries
Mumbai: A Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus crashed into the Switch Mobility office located within the Colaba depot on Saturday evening, following a handbrake lapse. The incident occurred around 5.10 pm, when the bus, attached to the Anik depot, rolled forward after the driver reportedly failed to apply the handbrake.
According to officials, the bus moved forward accidentally and hit the office, damaging the office door and shattering its own front windscreen. The bus was being operated by a BEST driver and conductor at the time of the accident. No injuries were reported, authorities confirmed.
The bus typically operates on routes A-361 (Kurla Bus Station–Mahal Village) and A-21 (Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Chowk–Deonar Depot). The exact cause of the handbrake lapse is under investigation, with BEST officials examining the driver's actions and the vehicle's mechanical condition.
This incident adds to a series of recent mishaps involving BEST buses in Mumbai, highlighting ongoing concerns about driver training and vehicle maintenance. However, BEST has stated that safety protocols are being reviewed. The damaged office and bus are being assessed for repairs.
