Gurugram Waterlogging After One-Hour Rain Prompts WFH Advisory, Residents Demand Fix

After just one hour of rainfall, several parts of Gurugram experienced severe waterlogging on [day], disrupting traffic and prompting the district administration to advise employees to work from home. The city received 70 mm of rain by 1.30 pm, according to the district administration.

Patel Nagar was among the worst-hit localities, with residents reporting knee-deep water on roads. Other affected areas included Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Railway Road, Sector 5, Old Delhi Road, Mehrauli Road, Basai Road, and Sheetla Mata Road, which has emerged as a flood-prone spot this monsoon. A stretch of the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway near Cyber Hub, opposite Gateway Tower Metro station, was also submerged, slowing traffic on the major thoroughfare.

Visuals from the city showed commuters navigating treacherous conditions. In Patel Nagar, an elderly man in a white kurta-pyjama waded through water, his two-wheeler half submerged. A young woman in a green t-shirt pushed her vehicle through muddy water that residents said likely mixed with sewage from drains attached to the road. Students walking home from school carried their bags above their heads, cautiously testing the ground beneath the water for potholes or open manholes.

Many two-wheeler riders abandoned their vehicles because the uneven, hidden surface made it impossible to use the side stand. Several car drivers left their vehicles after engines stalled in the water. The rain also slowed traffic on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway, with commuters reporting that the stretch from Signature Tower to Hero Honda Chowk, which normally takes 15 minutes, took at least 50 minutes.

Residents expressed frustration over the recurring failure of civic infrastructure during even moderate rainfall. Social media posts highlighted the lack of accountability despite repeated complaints. One user on X wrote, "The drainage system in Gurugram is abysmal. One can keep posting, keep demanding accountability but nothing changes. Nothing!"

The issue has affected localities across economic segments, including upscale areas. Near Magnolias, where some apartments are valued at over Rs 50 crore, roads were reported to be waterlogged. The district administration's work-from-home advisory was aimed at preventing commuters from navigating flooded streets, but officials did not specify how long it would remain in effect.

This is not the first time this monsoon that Gurugram has faced waterlogging after a short spell of rain. Frequent disruptions have led to growing demands for a permanent solution to the city's drainage and road maintenance problems. As the monsoon continues, civic groups and residents are calling for infrastructure upgrades that match the city's rapid urbanisation and high property values.
