Gurugram civic body fires two officials for using AI, GPS fakes to cover up dereliction of duty
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has terminated the services of two Assistant Sanitary Inspectors after investigations revealed they used technology to fabricate their work performance. The dismissals came to light on Wednesday, following an internal inquiry into complaints of dereliction of duty.
According to officials, one of the inspectors was assigned to clear a mound of garbage dumped near Kherki Daula Village after residents lodged complaints. Photographs purporting to show the area clean and sanitary were uploaded to the MCG's grievance portal. However, a subsequent inspection confirmed that the site had not been cleaned. Investigators found that the official had used Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to alter the original images, making it appear that the garbage had been removed.
In a separate incident, another inspector was found to have used GPS spoofing technology to fake his attendance records. The practice involves manipulating location data on mobile devices to make it appear that the user is at a different location. This allowed the official to claim he was on duty when he was not.
The MCG said it has a zero-tolerance policy for such fraudulent practices, which undermine public trust and waste civic resources. The two officials were dismissed after a disciplinary committee found them guilty of misconduct. The corporation has also strengthened its monitoring mechanisms to detect similar attempts at deception in the future.
These incidents highlight the growing misuse of technology by government employees to evade accountability. While digital tools can enhance efficiency, their abuse for dishonest purposes poses a challenge for oversight agencies. The MCG has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
