Gujarat police destroy ₹2,153 crore worth of drugs in crackdown on narcotics networks
The Gujarat Police destroyed narcotic substances valued at ₹2,153 crore at a facility in Dahej, Bharuch district, on Monday. The drugs were seized in 867 cases across the state, with Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi stating that the operation had significantly impacted international drug trafficking networks.
The destruction, carried out at Enviro Infrastructure Limited’s facility, involved 13,249.127 kg of drugs and 5,71,028 bottles of narcotic substances. These were seized by 24 police units, including the CID Crime and the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). A parallel destruction programme was virtually inaugurated by Sanghavi at Lakadia in Kutch district.
“The Gujarat Police have dealt a major blow to international drug smuggling networks through decisive action against drug mafias and cartels,” Sanghavi said. He also noted that the state has achieved a conviction rate of approximately 65% in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Efforts are underway to improve this rate by strengthening investigations and prosecution, he added.
Sanghavi appealed to citizens and social organisations to support the government’s campaign for a drug-free Gujarat. During the programme, the police unveiled the NDPS Handbook, prepared by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force to assist investigating officers in effective implementation of the NDPS Act. Awareness films on drug abuse and rehabilitation were also screened.
Under the state’s Drug Reward Policy, 278 police personnel received cash rewards totalling ₹59.42 lakh for their role in detecting 21 major drug-related cases. Senior police officers, elected representatives and district administration officials attended the event.
