Government Says IIT Graduates Going Abroad a Matter of Individual Choice, Not a Concern

The Centre on Monday stated that Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduates who choose to pursue higher studies or employment abroad are exercising their 'individual will and choice'. The statement was made by Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar in response to a question in the Lok Sabha regarding the migration of IIT graduates.

Trinamool Congress MP Mala Roy had raised concerns about the brain drain of IIT graduates, seeking details on campus placements over the past three years, the number of graduates who secured placements but later moved abroad, and the reasons behind their migration. The minister's response highlighted that such decisions are influenced by multiple factors, including affordability, access to education loans, exposure to foreign societies, and aptitude for specific fields of study.

The government emphasised that it does not view the phenomenon as a matter of concern, but rather as a reflection of individual choice. The ministry also noted that IITs have introduced a range of initiatives to improve placement outcomes, including academia-industry conclaves and business summits. These measures aim to enhance employment opportunities for graduates within the country.

According to data provided by the ministry, the number of IIT graduates who moved abroad after placement has not been specifically tracked. However, the overall placement rates at IITs have remained robust, with the majority of graduates securing jobs in India. The government's stance aligns with the broader policy of encouraging global mobility while simultaneously working to strengthen domestic opportunities.

The response comes amid ongoing discussions about the competitiveness of Indian higher education and the challenges of retaining top talent. While some lawmakers and experts view the outflow as a loss of skilled human resources, the government maintains that it is a natural outcome of globalisation and individual aspirations.

Critics argue that the government should do more to create an attractive ecosystem for research and employment in India, particularly in high-tech sectors. However, the government's position remains that individual choice cannot be constrained and that efforts to improve domestic conditions are ongoing.
