Goa Police File FIR, Detain Man Over 'Free Umar Khalid' Placard at Protest
Goa Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified supporters of the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Judicial Reforms (CJP) and other protesters for allegedly assembling unlawfully and organising a gathering without prior permission from authorities.
On Saturday evening, police detained a man for carrying a placard reading “Free Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Bhima Koregaon 16” at a protest held at Azad Maidan in Panaji. The gathering was intended to show solidarity with similar protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and to mark the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
According to police, the incident occurred around 7 pm when attendees began raising slogans. A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that local media personnel confronted the man holding the placard. Police personnel stationed at the site then questioned him and asked for identification. The man reportedly stated he was not carrying any identity document.
The FIR was lodged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for unlawful assembly and violation of public order, officials said. The detained individual's identity has not been officially disclosed, and investigations are ongoing.
