GMADA Announces Rs 23,457 Crore Land Acquisition for Aerotropolis; Farmer Leaders Detained

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) on Monday announced land acquisition awards for 3,522.98 acres across eight villages in Punjab, as part of the Mohali Aerotropolis project. The total compensation package amounts to approximately Rs 23,457 crore.

The acquisition covers Blocks E to J of the proposed township. Meanwhile, police detained several farmer leaders ahead of a planned protest against the compensation terms offered by the Punjab government. Heavy police deployment was observed outside the GMADA office to prevent demonstrations.

BKU (Rajewal) state secretary Paramdeep Singh Baidwan alleged that Mohali police launched a crackdown early Monday, detaining Kamaljit Singh (Bari), Makhan Singh (Gigemajra), and Sewa Singh (Bakarpur). He further claimed that Nachhattar Singh Baidwan was placed under house detention, and police visited his own residence to arrest him.

The affected farmers have announced an indefinite protest, rejecting the compensation package. The Punjab government has not yet commented on the allegations of preventive detentions.
