German Envoy: Indian Migration a Success, Hails Stronger Ties as Tenure Ends
As outgoing German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann prepares to leave India after four years, he has described Indian migration to Germany as a success story and praised the deepening ties between the two nations. In an interview, Ackermann noted that Indians have integrated remarkably well into the German labour market.
Reflecting on 75 years of diplomatic relations and 25 years of strategic partnership, Ackermann highlighted a significant shift in focus. He said there is now a renewed interest in Europe within India and vice versa, creating a 'magnetic field' of cooperation.
On the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union, Ackermann called it a milestone. He pointed out that agriculture, a historically sensitive sector, was largely excluded from the deal to facilitate smoother negotiations. Germany’s priorities, he said, were in automobile manufacturing and machinery, and the outcomes were satisfactory.
Ackermann credited mutual goodwill for unlocking areas like defence and migration. He cited the agreement to lift transit visas as a long-awaited breakthrough. 'In this volatile, unruly global environment, this is a partnership that will play a big role in the future,' he said.
The ambassador also noted the expansion of opportunities for Indian students and skilled professionals in Germany, reflecting the positive integration outcomes.
