Georgia School Shooting Leaves Student Wounded; Teen Suspect in Custody
Warner Robins, Georgia — A shooting at Warner Robins High School on Wednesday left one student wounded and a teenage suspect in custody after a brief manhunt, authorities said. The incident, which occurred just one week into the new school year, triggered a rapid response from dozens of law enforcement officers. Warner Robins is approximately 164 kilometres southeast of Atlanta.
Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton said at an evening news conference that the injured student was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He said the shooting took place inside a school bathroom, where a verbal altercation between two ninth-grade students escalated into a physical fight. One student was shot at 2:15 p.m. local time, and the suspect fled the campus.
A school resource officer, who was present on campus, responded immediately and applied tourniquets to the student's injuries, keeping the student stable until emergency medical personnel arrived. The officer remained with the student until the student was transported to a hospital, Sheriff Moulton said. Officials credited the officer's quick actions with preventing the injuries from becoming worse.
Law enforcement agencies launched a search for the suspect, and about an hour later, the teenager was taken into custody “without further incident” in a neighbourhood roughly 800 metres from the school, the sheriff said. The suspect is also a ninth-grade student. Neither student has been identified publicly, as both are minors.
Sheriff Moulton emphasized that the response followed established protocols. “The school threat protocol and our training was followed perfectly today,” he said. “Fortunately what could have been a much-worse incident was minimised to us only having one student injured.” He declined to answer questions, citing the active investigation. It was not immediately known whether the school has metal detectors in place, and officials did not provide details about the weapon used.
Houston County Schools Superintendent Richard Rogers announced that the school would be closed for students on Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14. Staff are expected to report on Friday for planning and training. Crisis counsellors will be available at the school for staff on Friday and for students on Monday, August 17. “We're going to focus on healing,” Mr. Rogers said.
The district said the closure is intended to give students and staff time to process the incident and to allow investigators to complete their work at the scene. Additional support, including counselling services, will be available in the coming days. The district also said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement, though no further details have been released.
The shooting has renewed attention on safety in American schools, but officials in Houston County have not commented on any policy changes. They have only said that the priority is the well-being of the school community. As the investigation continues, authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and to rely on official communications from the school district and law enforcement. In the meantime, the district has said it will review its safety protocols after the investigation concludes, but no immediate changes have been announced.
