GATE 2027 Registration Deadline Extended to October 5: IIT Madras Offers More Time Without Late Fee

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has extended the registration deadline for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. Candidates can now submit their applications without a late fee until October 5, 2026, the exam-conducting institute said.

The institute took the decision after receiving a large number of requests from applicants seeking more time to complete their forms. It has advised candidates to finish the process at the earliest instead of waiting for the closing day, since portal traffic tends to rise sharply towards the deadline.

GATE is a national-level examination conducted annually on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. The scores are used for admission to postgraduate programmes such as MTech, ME, MS and PhD in engineering, technology, architecture and science, and are also considered for recruitment by several public sector undertakings.

Revised dates at a glance

Applications submitted without a late fee will be accepted up to October 5, 2026. Those who miss this window can apply with a late fee until October 12, 2026. Once the application window closes, the institute will open a correction window from October 14 to 21, 2026, during which candidates can rectify errors in their submitted forms.

The examination will be held on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. The date for the release of admit cards will be announced later on the official GATE portal.

Documents required

Applicants must upload a passport-size photograph and a signature. A category certificate and a PwD (person with disability) certificate must be provided where applicable. A valid photo identity proof — such as an Aadhaar card, voter ID card, passport or driving licence — is also required.

The institute has cautioned that any mismatch in the information provided, or failure to meet the prescribed document specifications, could render an application invalid. Candidates are therefore advised to check all entries carefully before submitting the form.

How to apply

Step 1: Visit the official GATE 2027 website, gate2027.iitm.ac.in.

Step 2: Register using a valid email ID, mobile number and password.

Step 3: After successful registration, an enrolment ID will be sent to the registered email ID.

Step 4: Log in to the portal using the enrolment ID.

Step 5: The GATE 2027 application form will appear on the screen.

Step 6: Fill in personal and academic details accurately.

Step 7: Upload all required documents in the specified format.

Step 8: Pay the registration fee and submit the form.

Step 9: Download the confirmation page and save it for future reference.

Candidates are advised to keep a copy of the confirmation page, note the correction window dates, and follow only the official website for updates on admit cards and other announcements. Details such as fees, paper codes and eligibility criteria should be verified on the official portal before applying.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
