From Student Protests to Union Minister: Dharmendra Pradhan's Political Journey

Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister of Education and Skill Development, has a political career that began with student activism. In 1996, he led a protest against paper leaks as a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This agitation brought him into the limelight and marked the start of his rise in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Pradhan was born on June 26, 1969, in Talcher, Odisha. His father, Debendra Pradhan, was a former Rajya Sabha member and a founding figure of the BJP in the state. His early exposure to politics came through his family, but it was his leadership in the 1996 paper leak protest that established his credentials as a grassroots mobiliser.

Over the years, Pradhan climbed the ranks of the BJP. He served as the party's state president in Odisha and later as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Bihar. In 2014, he was inducted into the Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, first as Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, and later as a full cabinet minister for Education in 2021.

His tenure has not been without controversies. In 2024, allegations of irregularities in competitive examinations, including the NEET-UG medical entrance test, drew criticism. Pradhan faced calls for accountability from opposition parties, who pointed to his role as Education Minister. However, he defended the government's actions, citing measures taken to curb cheating and improve transparency.

Pradhan's journey from a student protester to a senior minister reflects the trajectory of many BJP leaders who started in the RSS and ABVP. Critics argue that his career highlights the politicisation of education, while supporters see it as an example of meritocracy and grassroots leadership.

As India prepares for the next general elections, Pradhan remains a key figure in the BJP's strategy in Odisha, where the party hopes to make further inroads. His early activism continues to be a part of his political narrative, with some noting the irony of a former paper leak protester now overseeing the education system.

In a statement earlier this year, Pradhan said, 'I have always stood for students and their right to a fair examination system. My past struggles inform my present actions.' He emphasized the government's commitment to conducting exams with integrity.

The opposition, however, remains skeptical. Congress spokesperson Pramod Tiwari said, 'The minister's own past does not absolve the government of its current failures. We demand a thorough investigation into the alleged breaches.'

Regardless of the political debates, Pradhan's story underscores the complex relationship between activism, governance, and accountability in Indian democracy.
