France Reports First Ebola Case in Doctor Returning from DRC
France has confirmed its first case of Ebola, involving a doctor who had returned from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the French health ministry announced on Wednesday.
The doctor was immediately admitted to a specialised medical facility and is in stable condition, according to the ministry. Authorities are working to trace individuals who may have had contact with the doctor, though officials stress that the risk to the general population remains very low.
The DRC declared an Ebola outbreak last month, though experts believe the virus had been circulating for weeks prior. To date, more than 260 people have died from the virus in the central African nation, with over 1,000 confirmed infections.
Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals, placing healthcare workers at heightened risk. The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo species of the virus, for which no licensed vaccine currently exists.
In response, France has implemented a dedicated monitoring system for aid workers returning from the DRC. The health ministry reiterated that containment measures are in place to prevent further spread.
