Four Indian Crew Members Killed in Missile Attack on Ship Leaving Odesa: MEA
New Delhi, July 20: Four Indian nationals were killed and one critically injured in a missile attack on a commercial vessel departing from Ukraine's southern port of Odesa on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Monday.
The ship, MV Golden Leo, was struck by three cruise missiles while sailing out of Odesa. Ukraine's Navy, in a statement on Telegram, attributed the attack to Russian forces. The vessel had 17 crew members on board, including five Indians.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the MEA condemned the attack, stating: 'India condemns such attacks and reiterates that targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members, or otherwise impeding freedom of navigation and commerce, is deplorable and should be avoided.'
The Indian embassy in Ukraine is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts to provide assistance to the affected individuals and their families. The MEA extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured crew member a speedy recovery.
The attack on MV Golden Leo adds to the growing number of incidents involving commercial vessels in the Black Sea region amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The international community has repeatedly called for the safety of civilian shipping routes and adherence to international maritime law.
India has consistently urged all parties to exercise restraint and ensure the protection of civilian lives and infrastructure. The government is in touch with Ukrainian authorities and other stakeholders to secure the well-being of remaining Indian crew members and facilitate necessary support.
