Flooded into an Island: Bhogavo River Inundates Vanitalav Bhal in Gujarat
For the second time in as many days, a village in Gujarat's Ahmedabad district has been cut off by floodwaters. Vanitalav Bhal village in Dholera taluka has been transformed into an island after the Bhogavo river breached its banks on the night of Sunday, August 11, 2024. The village, located about 100 kilometres from Ahmedabad city near the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, is now accessible only by boat.
The Ahmedabad rural police, in coordination with the district administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), launched rescue operations on Monday morning. Officials said that all residents have been moved to higher ground and temporary relief centres, with no casualties reported so far.
The Bhogavo river, which flows west-to-east through the region, swelled due to heavy rainfall in its catchment area. This is the same weather system that caused severe flooding in Dholka, Bavla, and Viramgam talukas over the weekend, where the Sabarmati river overflowed and sheet flows from North Gujarat added to the deluge.
Gujarat has been experiencing an active monsoon this August, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing orange alerts for several districts. The state government has mobilised rescue and relief teams, with the NDRF conducting evacuations in multiple locations. In Dholera, the flooding has submerged agricultural fields and disrupted road connectivity, affecting the livelihoods of farming communities.
Local authorities are assessing the damage and planning long-term measures to mitigate such events, including strengthening embankments and improving drainage. The incident highlights the vulnerability of low-lying areas to sudden riverine flooding during intense monsoon spells.
As of Monday evening, the water level in the Bhogavo river was receding slowly, but the administration remains on high alert. No further evacuation orders have been issued, but residents are advised to stay away from the riverbanks and follow official updates.
