Flash Floods in Arunachal's Kurung Kumey Damage Church, Houses, Bridges

Heavy monsoon rainfall triggered severe flash floods in the Kurung Kumey district of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday, causing significant damage to infrastructure and property in the remote border town of Parsi Parlo.

The floods, which began in the early hours, were caused by incessant rain that led to the Kumey River overflowing its banks. The downpour also affected the neighbouring districts of Kamle and Pakke Kessang.

The rising waters of the Parsi Parlo River inundated residential areas and public infrastructure. According to local sources, two houses were partially damaged, and a Baptist church was destroyed. The bridge connecting Huri to Damin was washed away, disrupting road connectivity. Similarly, the bridge to Pagam Village was also swept away, severely affecting transportation and access to the region.

The disaster cut off road communication with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) camp due to the bridge collapse. The district administration has been coordinating with paramilitary forces, police, and local stakeholders for relief assessment and response.

No casualties have been reported so far. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and assess the full extent of the damage.

Environmentalists urge Supreme Court panel to broaden Aravalli consultations ahead of deadline

A coalition of environmental groups has written to the Supreme Court-constituted committee studying the Aravallis, alleging inadequate scientific study, public consultation, and field trips. The activists have urged the panel to seek more time and involve independent experts and local communities before the August 31 deadline. The committee is tasked with evaluating a previous report that defined the Aravalli range based on elevation criteria.
