Five killed as vehicle plunges into Chenab in Kishtwar
Five people were killed on Saturday after their Mahindra Scorpio skidded off the road and plunged into the Chenab River in the Dachhan area of Yaivan in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. The accident occurred on August 15, 2026, and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the spot.
Officials confirmed that five bodies have been recovered so far. The identities of the deceased are being ascertained, and the exact number of occupants in the vehicle at the time of the accident is yet to be established. Rescue operations are continuing, with teams from the police and district administration working alongside local residents to search the river. Divers and boats have been pressed into service to locate the vehicle.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh expressed grief over the incident. He said on X that he spoke to Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma after receiving information about the accident. "Unfortunately, all five passengers travelling in the vehicle lost their lives on the spot," Mr. Singh said, offering his condolences to the bereaved families.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. In a post on social media, he said, "My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Have directed the district administration and senior officials to ensure immediate assistance is provided to those affected."
Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary directed officials to extend all possible help to the affected families. He said, "Praying for strength for everyone affected by this devastating tragedy."
The accident highlights the risks faced by commuters in the hilly terrain of Kishtwar, where roads are narrow and winding, particularly along riverbanks. The region experiences heavy rain during the monsoon, making roads slippery and increasing the likelihood of such incidents. Local authorities have periodically urged drivers to exercise caution while travelling on these routes.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. Efforts are underway to retrieve the vehicle from the river and to verify the identities of the deceased. Further details are awaited as the rescue and relief operations continue.
